So Many Security Fences, Which One Should I Choose?

Jan. 11, 2022

When you are installing a fence, whether indoor or outdoor, it is important to weigh your options before purchasing for safety reasons. The three most popular types of security fencing are: welded wire mesh, woven wire mesh, and chain link. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and some are better suited for specific applications than others.

Woven Wire Fence

Woven wire fencing falls somewhere between chain link and welded wire. It is slightly more flexible, just like chain link, because it is made of two layers of interwoven wire. Flexibility may help if you expect the fence to take a lot of hits, as the flexible wire moves with the impact and absorbs it.

However, flexibility is also a weakness. If cut, the wires will simply come apart because the intersections are not physically connected together.

One of the major benefits of braided wire, especially when compared to chain link, is its streamlined and finished aesthetic. Because the woven wire is finished with a powder coating, the overall appearance is more uniform than the generic and unpolished look of chain link.

Chain Link Fence

When you imagine security fencing, chain link usually comes to mind, especially for outdoor security fencing. For starters, it tends to be the most cost-effective style of fencing. The affordability of chain link is one of its main selling points.

It is also one of the better options for outdoor installations. Chain link is usually galvanized or coated with aluminum or vinyl, which makes it very durable and able to withstand harsh outdoor weather.

However, chain link makes it one of the easier fences to climb due to its large openings and flexibility. The large openings and flexible lines of chain link are ineffective for machine guarding and are not a polished look for indoor security equipment.

Welded Wire Mesh Fence

Welded wire fencing is easily the most durable and versatile of the three fencing options. It is made by crossing two layers of wire at right angles to each other and welding them together at the point of intersection. While not as flexible and pliable as chain link or woven wire, welded wire fencing is extremely durable.

Because it is fused together at the intersection, it will not come apart if cut. As a result, it is the most adaptable of the three. If the fence is installed around a pipe or similar obstruction, it can be easily cut and reshaped in the field during installation.

The narrow opening also ensures that no hands or fingers can pass through the wire, protecting employees or passersby from potential injury.

Which is best

It really depends on the application. The weather resistance and cost effectiveness of chain link certainly make it an attractive choice, while on the other hand, welded wire mesh is definitely the best choice for applications such as machine guarding or data center security, and woven wire mesh falls somewhere in between.
