How to Install A Welded Wire Fencing Myself

Nov. 10, 2021

Choosing the right fence for your project can be overwhelming if you don't have a lot of experience with property fencing. Fortunately, welded wire fencing is a great and common choice because it's simple, low maintenance quality, and protective. We share with you how to install a welded wire fence yourself.

Welded wire fencing is created by layering wire in simple horizontal and vertical patterns to form square or rectangular spaces. This pattern allows for extra strength. The wires will not unravel from each other as they would with a woven wire fence, which provides the ultimate protection if someone tries to cut through the fence.

How to install a wire fence

Wire fences are great for DIY projects because they are inexpensive, simple, and easy to install. Welded wire fencing is much lighter than woven wire fencing, and it uses less wire.

Consider

Before you buy the materials and start the project, you'll want to think about what your fence will be used for. What are you going to use it for and what do you want it to look like? What area do you want to enclose and how much of the yard does the fence need to cover? What kind of protective coating and finish does your fence need? Once you have a clear idea, you will need some basic materials, including basic tools such as hammers, welding wire, wooden posts and fence nails.

Steps

After you obtain the materials, there are only a few other basic steps to follow.

Dig the hole

Drive the posts into the ground a few feet from each other, depending on how many posts you have and how long you want the fence to be.

Top and bottom rails

Cut the top rails to the correct length so that each top rail ends in the middle of a post. Nail them to the top of the post. The bottom rails need to be cut to fit between the posts, and after cutting, slide them into place between the posts.

Nail the mesh guardrail

Unfold the welded metal mesh from post to post. You may need someone to hold the beginning of the mesh on the first post. Using a fence stapler, staple the mesh to the top rail every 3 inches until you reach the next post. When you get to the next post, pull it tight and staple the fence to the post every 6 inches. Go back again and staple the fence to the bottom rail just as you stapled it to the top rail.

Trim the excess netting

Continue with step 3 until you reach the last post. After that, use metal trimming scissors to trim the excess mesh that extends beyond the posts and rails. If you have more mesh than needed, you will have to do this. Trim the mesh rolls evenly next to the last post. You can nail a cap rail to the top railing to keep the wire fence in place.
